What the numbers show
The third placed BSP candidate Mohammad Irfan Advocate polled 71,585 votes, more than the winning margin. The winner polled less than half the valid votes, so the combined vote of the other candidates was higher. Ranked by winning margin, Etah stood at number 67 among the 80 seats of Uttar Pradesh, where rank 1 is the largest margin.
Assembly segments of Etah
The Etah parliamentary constituency is made up of 5 assembly segments: Kasganj, Amanpur, Patiyali, Etah, Marhara. In the 2022 assembly election two years earlier, these segments were won as follows: BJP 4, SP 1. Comparing the two elections helps show how far voters in the area shifted between a state election and a national one, although Lok Sabha and assembly contests are fought on different issues.
| Assembly segment | 2022 MLA | Party | 2022 margin |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kasganj | Devendra Singh | BJP | 46,265 |
| Amanpur | Hariom | BJP | 43,329 |
| Patiyali | Nadira Sultan alias Bitiya | SP | 4,001 |

How Lok Sabha elections work
Members of the Lok Sabha are directly elected under Article 81 of the Constitution, one from each parliamentary constituency, using the first past the post system. The term of the House is five years from its first sitting unless dissolved earlier. The 18th Lok Sabha first met in June 2024, so the next general election is due in 2029. NOTA, the ‘None of the Above’ option, was added to EVMs after a Supreme Court judgment in 2013; NOTA votes are counted but do not affect who wins.
All numbers in this article are taken from the official results published by the Election Commission of India. Vote shares are calculated on total valid votes, including NOTA where stated.
