Candidates, women and NOTA
A total of 266 candidates contested the 25 seats of Rajasthan in 2024, of whom 19 were women. 3 of the winning candidates were women. In 21 of the 25 seats, the winner polled more than half of the valid votes. NOTA received 2,79,464 votes across the state, about 0.84% of all valid votes counted.
What the result means
The BJP finished with the most seats in Rajasthan, winning 14 with 49.64% of the valid votes. Seat counts under first past the post do not always track vote shares closely, so parties with similar vote shares can end up with very different numbers of seats. At the national level, the BJP won 240 seats in 2024, short of a majority of its own, and formed the government with its NDA allies, while the Congress won 99 seats as the largest party in the INDIA bloc.
How Lok Sabha elections work
The Lok Sabha has 543 elected seats, and members are directly elected under Article 81 of the Constitution using the first past the post system. Seats are allocated to states broadly on the basis of population, and Uttar Pradesh has the largest share with 80 seats. The 18th Lok Sabha first met in June 2024, so the next general election is due in 2029. NOTA votes are counted and reported, but they do not affect who wins a seat.
For Uttar Pradesh readers, comparing other states helps put the 2024 verdict in context. The Samajwadi Party’s 37 seats in Uttar Pradesh made it the third largest party in the Lok Sabha after the BJP and the Congress.
All numbers in this article are taken from the official results published by the Election Commission of India. Vote shares are calculated on total valid votes, including NOTA where stated.
