How Lok Sabha elections work
Members of the Lok Sabha are directly elected under Article 81 of the Constitution, one from each parliamentary constituency, using the first past the post system. The term of the House is five years from its first sitting unless dissolved earlier. The 18th Lok Sabha first met in June 2024, so the next general election is due in 2029. NOTA, the ‘None of the Above’ option, was added to EVMs after a Supreme Court judgment in 2013; NOTA votes are counted but do not affect who wins.
All numbers in this article are taken from the official results published by the Election Commission of India. Vote shares are calculated on total valid votes, including NOTA where stated.
