Turnout and electors

Saharanpur had 18,57,816 registered electors in 2024, and 12,30,347 of them voted, a turnout of about 66.23%. In all, 10 candidates were in the fray. The winner received 584 postal votes in addition to 5,47,383 votes cast on EVMs. The margin of 64,542 votes equals about 5.25% of the votes polled, which makes it a one sided contest.

What the numbers show

The third placed BSP candidate Majid Ali polled 1,80,353 votes, more than the winning margin. The winner polled less than half the valid votes, so the combined vote of the other candidates was higher. Ranked by winning margin, Saharanpur stood at number 41 among the 80 seats of Uttar Pradesh, where rank 1 is the largest margin.

Assembly segments of Saharanpur

The Saharanpur parliamentary constituency is made up of 5 assembly segments: Behat, Saharanpur Nagar, Saharanpur, Deoband, Rampur Maniharan. In the 2022 assembly election two years earlier, these segments were won as follows: BJP 3, SP 2. Comparing the two elections helps show how far voters in the area shifted between a state election and a national one, although Lok Sabha and assembly contests are fought on different issues.

How Lok Sabha elections work

Members of the Lok Sabha are directly elected under Article 81 of the Constitution, one from each parliamentary constituency, using the first past the post system. The term of the House is five years from its first sitting unless dissolved earlier. The 18th Lok Sabha first met in June 2024, so the next general election is due in 2029. NOTA, the ‘None of the Above’ option, was added to EVMs after a Supreme Court judgment in 2013; NOTA votes are counted but do not affect who wins.

All numbers in this article are taken from the official results published by the Election Commission of India. Vote shares are calculated on total valid votes, including NOTA where stated.
